Russia Forced to Outsource Manufacturing of the Iconic AK-47 to America

In a manufacturing twist, America is now a manufacturing location for the Russian Kalashnikov AK-47. The famed historical weapon's manufacturer is moving some of its production to Pompano Beach, Florida for legal reasons. Kalashnikov USA used to be an approved retailer of imported AK-47s until the 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea, which led to President Obama's ban on Russian-made weapons into the US, as part of sanctions against the former U.S.S.R., beginning on July 16, 2014.

The AK-47, also known as the Kalashnikov AK-47, named after the gun's designer, a former peasant, Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, born in 1919. Conscripted into the Red Army during World War II in 1938, Kalashnikov was seriously injured in combat.

During his time healing from his wounds, he designed a new rifle. That design wasn't approved, but it did get him into the exclusive weapons designer's club, where the AK-47 was born! In 1949, the rifle went 'live' in the Soviet Union and since, it's become one of the most popular guns in history.

Since then, countless countries have attempted to replicate the rifle, but none with the same success as the original.

For undisclosed reasons, the Pennsylvania company will move the gun's manufacturing to Pompano Beach, Florida. The company is keeping mum on many of the details, but it is known that it will have 28 employees to start and they hope to expand to 54 jobs with an average annual salary of $51,266.

The company has received approval by city planners for "light manufacturing." Along with the AK-47, they introduced a new line of rifles and shotguns at the 2016 conference for the National Shooting Sports Foundation in Las Vegas in early January.

Although the weapons will be manufactured in the US now, it's unclear how much of the final product is sourced from America. Kalashnikov USA has a license from city officials and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to import parts, but it hasn't disclosed which parts or what countries they will be importing from.

It's presumed that they will still purchase ammo and sell all its products from the company's current location in Tullytown, Pennsylvania.
