Did Your State Increase Minimum Wage for 2016?

Written By: Brenda (B.K.) Walker

January 2016

As 2016 rolled in it brought with it a few events, beyond the mega-weather and the continued political bantering of "wanna-be" presidential candidates, that barely made the mainstream news cycle, if any news cycle at all. Congress may have put the kibosh on a 2016 "cost-of-living-adjustment" (COLA) for Social Security recipients, but some states recognized the need to at least increase the minimum wage for some of their constituents.

Not every state chose to increase its minimum wage. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), (State Minimum Wages/2016 Minimum Wage By State, 2016) only 14 states began 2016 with an increase to its minimum wage. The majority, 12 states, increased minimum wage due to legislation passed in previous sessions during 2014 and/or 2015; the remaining 2 states' minimum wage was increased automatically based on an increase in the cost of living.

According to Benefit Mall, (2016 Minimum Wage Rates) the following states had minimum wage increases:
