Oops, Wal-Mart Did It Again: Announces Closure of 154 U.S. Locations

Written By: Christine Dantz

January 2016

On Friday, January 15th, Wal-Mart, one of the world's leading retailers, announced the closure of 269 locations worldwide, of which the majority are in the U.S. According to the announcement, 102 out of 105 are part of a 2011 go-small pilot campaign with "Wal-Mart Express" that failed. It will include several regular Wal-Mart locations, Wal-Mart Supercenters, and a few of the retail chain's wholesale locations, Sam's Clubs.

The decision to close the underperforming stores will impact approximately 16,000 workers worldwide, of which 10,000 are in the U.S. The press release ensures that they will do their best to relocate those workers to other locations in their area and provide any of the workers that can't be relocated a 60-day severance package, along with assistance finding another job through resume and interviewing skills training.

Does this mean that Wal-Mart is starting to fall? Have no fear, the company plans to open more than 300 stores by 2017 to fill the void.
