Where to Find the Most Innovative Areas of America
Written By: Christine Dantz
America's most innovative county is not located on the West or East Coast; in fact, most Americans would be surprised to find it's almost smack dab in the middle of the country in Guthrie County, Iowa. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Census Bureau's latest data, residents of the 10,000-person county filed 82 utility patents in 2013.
Guthrie's patents are primarily patents of utility, which mostly cover soybean and corn cultivators. Utility patents account for 92 percent of all patents issued by the department in 2013. The broad category covers machines, methods, and ideas. These patents are good for 20 years or until the patent holder stops paying the maintenance fees.
Counties with major research and tech institutions tend to produce the most patents in the U.S.—Santa Clara County, California had 756 patents per 100,000 people in 2013. The county is home to Stanford University and Silicon Valley.
